Literally poking my eyes out

We use this term "literally" to attempt to give pizzazz to hackneyed metaphors. Oh, we think, if it's old and decrepit, just glue "literally" to the phrase and suddenly it has life again.

Um, no.

(By the way, we do the same thing with "proverbial": It's the proverbial ride into the sunset. Nope. Still an old cliche.)

Let me show you what I'm talkin' 'bout, Willis:

I was literally stuck between a rock and a hard place.

Only if you're rock climbing.

Remember that diatribe I wrote last Friday? Well, the Napoleon Dynamite gods decided to exact their revenge.
After a lovely weekend of camping, where the only chirping was that of birds rather than phones, where blinking was at the awe and majesty of creation and the Creator God, not computer screens. It was beautiful.
Then we came home.
And I needed my Internet.
But I had no Internet. Nor did we have TV.
Verizon equipment had gone kaput.

A Diatribe in E-Flat Minor

Don't get me wrong. I'm not a hater of technology. I like it. I like my laptop. I like my cell-phone. I especially like my coffee maker with the timer.
But sometimes it bugs me that now, because of technology, when you're with someone, you're not really with someone (Godfather, anyone?). You meet a friend for tea, but their cell phone rings half a dozen times, so in the middle of a heart-to-heart she breaks to talk to Suzy about bringing snacks for the next event.

Tribute to Katie and Taylor

And perhaps a bit of a diatribe to my now least favorite airline.
My sister, Cheryl, my niece, Taylor, and I were on our way home from New Jersey. We had a great vacation, but it was time to go home. We walked into the airport to discover that our flight was thus far delayed an hour and a half. Apparently the Philadelphia airport shuts down with the first sign of rain. We would miss our connecting flight to Atlanta! I spoke with the supervisor at the ticketing window.
