I don’t read a lot of chick lits or murder mysteries, so to read a book with both rolled up together was an anomally. But let me tell you, reader, this book captivated me. Bell’s (main character) wit had me laughing out loud.
I don't know. Maybe it's not chick lit. It has the sass of chick lit, but not really the concerns of chick lit. To be honest, the whole chick lit category confuses me once you get out of the shopping and heels stuff.
In between the laughs, Burney dealt with hard issues such as divorce and remarriage, life in the occult (and healing after getting out), interdenominational relations, and a single person’s honest-to-goodness struggles with lust for the person to whom they are attracted. Yes, people, that’s normal, and I love that Burney didn’t shy away from that. And can I say this? While reading this book, I was an African-American woman. And you know what? I loved it. (Being African-American and the book.) In fact, I loved it so much, that I've decided to make it the June giveaway for Glimpses (which goes out next week).

I have a small book club of five, and I chose this book by Claudia Mair Burney, hoping
it would be a great read to each member.......guess what? We loved it! It has to be difficult to combine funny, murder, romance, and scripture without running into a brick wall. I love a book which leaves me wanting more. The characters were very visible by description. The Author's personality kept seeping through, and we loved it. We couldn' t put the book down. It had something for everyone. I like the questions at the end of the book , also the first chapter of the sequel. Just want to give thumbs up to the Author.
if you'd like to do a book swap with this one because it looks really interesting. Guess I'll have to play "survivor" with the Glimpses crowd if I want a stab at it, instead.
Thank you for beginning to clarify "chick lit" for me. Shopping and heels, huh? I kind of got that sense over the years, and since I dislike both of those, I assumed that chick lit was just not for me. Maybe it's just that terminology that I don't care for... I don't know... I don't think I'd really go for "burly iron worker lit" or "suave metrosexual laywer lit" either... I'm a girl without a genre. Ack!
sounds like a great read!!
