Everything I Need to Know I Learned on a Ship

"Whenever I find myself growing grim about the mouth; whenever it is a damp, drizzly November in my soul; whenever I find myself involuntarly pausing before coffin warehouses, and bringing up the rear of every funeral I meet; and especially whenever my hypos get such an upper hand of me, that it requires a strong moral principle to prevent me from deliberately stepping into the street, and methodically knocking people's hats off--then, I account it high time to get to sea as soon as I can." (Herman Melville, Moby Dick)

All that relaxation undone in a single hour.

Yes, I spent an hour trying to upload a post about everything I learned on the cruise. Erased in a single minute.

I hate technology. Back to the ship I go.

Second try:

  1. Don't shift in your seat during an art auction. When the auctioneer has pounded his gavel and lifted it to you, you may discover that you've become the proud owner of a new piece of art. You think I'm kidding. Good thing I like the piece. In fact, we liked it so much that we bought two more that we like even better.
  2. A cruise ship is the most international place in the world. You will be served by every nation and every tongue.
  3. The gentle rocking of the ship cures insomnia.
  4. The odd mixture of people cures writer's block.
  5. You can and will eat unceasingly. If not for the huge size of the boat, which required a lot of walking, and the excursions, I would now weigh approximately 478 lbs.
  6. It's the most sociable place in the world. I have no less than 213 new bffs.
  7. Your feet can and will burn. Get that SPF 50 all the way down to your toes.
  8. Take bugspray. The Jamaican bug'll get you. Seriously. I don't know what those things are, but they're itchy!

(Who is that random guy behind us?)
  9. You won't read as much as you think you will, partly due to the 3,289,492 (to be exact) activities on the ship, and partly due to the hypnosis of the ocean "blending cadence of waves and thoughts" as Melville puts it.
  10. The ocean is, in fact, that blue. It looks like gallons of azure dye were dumped into the water.

Searching for Moby Dick--ahoy, mateys!

My An Affair to Remember--isn't he handsome?

Discovering the Black Pearl--arrgh!

Sail ho! Bear down on the chase, me hearties. No quarter when we gain on 'er. (Translation: I see a ship! Get the ship we're after, crew. No surrender will be accepted.)

Heather,
We took that cruise last fall to celebrate our 10th anniversary. I can so relate to the 478 pounds you might have gained if you'd taken the elevators instead of the stairs. Hiking across ship was my only salvation. So glad you enjoyed it. We still talk about it and enjoy the wonderful pictures and memories.

We actually took another couple friend with us and--crazy as this seems--it added tons to our experience. The guys could bum together when the girls wanted to read and sun themselves; the girls had shopping/browsing partners when the guys wanted to nap...always someone to hang with. Still lots of alone time with the hubby, too :) We're planning a repeat cruise for our friends' 15th in a couple of years...

Ah, you make me want to move back to Fl or even the Caribbean right now!!

Sorry your first post got marooned on some undiscovered, deserted island.
But I thoroughly enjoyed the second post and pictures. Glad you had a great time and are re-energized!

that is so awesome, heather. seriously awesome. i'm so glad you included pictures. i was looking at the one with you and your hub in the water out of the corner of my eye while reading the information you'd written above it, and once i scrolled down further, i thought, 'who the heck is that guy behind them?' only to find that was the exact same question you included in parentheses. that's really funny that you didn't know him. heh.

thanks for sharing! i bet it's a bit hard to be back home.

He is really kinda inserting himself in your happy couple picture, isn't he? What is he DOING?? Fishing with his bare hands?
At least you have several more happy couple shots without Mr. Tattooed Hand Fisher imposing himself.

Do we get to see all the pieces of art you bought? Pretty please?

Like the cornrows, chiquita. That is a Carribean MUST for tourists.

I love my braids!!

The other two pieces will be shipped (haha) to us, so as soon as I get them, I'll post pics!

i laughed when i read the line about all that relaxation undone in an hour. it's terrifying how fast life jumps back on top of you and ties you up like a rodeo calf, isn't it? i hope every time you see your art you are transported back to that ocean and its lovely rocking peace.

So glad you're back. You look so relaxed and happy there...I hope the pics don't lie.

I'm SO GLAD you had a good time!! You guys look fabulously happy and, more importantly, relaxed. Love your dress, by the way!

... the water, your smiles, and that piece of art. A cruise of contentment!

Ahoy! Gorgeous pics, H. So cool. Glad for you.

"I know whose blood ya need."
